Start your journey along the nave towards the gilded reredos, but pause to see an inscription on a column on the right. With the reformation the walls were whitewashed and more commonly religious texts quoting from the new English King Jame’s Bible replaced the icons on walls. This one remains because it was hidden behind a cabinet. It is the verse Luke 10:16 where Jesus tells his disciples that whoever rejects them and the good news they carry reject Jesus and therefore reject God as well. This is a challenging statement to make if Jesus was merely another human being and speaks, as so many passages in the gospels do, of the incarnation of Jesus as both human and divine.

Luke 10:16 Authorized King James Version: 16 He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me.

It is very likely that you are walking the same way that Queen Elizabeth I did when she visited the Abbey in 1573 when she also funded some repairs to the North Aisle, and her initials and the date can be seen on the exterior stonework.
